Geological Setting The IRAC is hosted in folded and faulted sedimentary rocks of Cambrian to lower Ordovician age (Currie 1975). These units are the slaty-limestone of the McKay Group (Cambro-Ordovician), massive limestone of the Ottertail Formation (Cambrian), and the sheared argillaceous rocks of the Cambrian Chanceller Formation (Allan 1914, Aitken Norford 1967). 

Numerous volcanic centres occur on the seafloor of the Sicily Channel (Fig. 8.1). Calanchi et al. (1989) recognised at least ten recent submarine volcanoes of various dimensions, mostly located along NW-SE regional faults. Some of these volcanoes have erupted during historical times others are covered by undisturbed Pliocene-Quaternary sediments and have been detected by seismic profiles and magnetic survey (Allan and Morelli 1971). 

Nowadays, whenever some fossil starts giving me that Allan-Bloom-Closing-of-the-American -Mind-ifs-all-the-fault-of-the-sixties -generation rap, I plan to hand him The Invisible Landscape and suggest he chew through a few chapters before we chat further about declining standards.
