Alkylated polysilanes, thermochromic

When the substituent groups are large (aryl or branched alkyl) normally no long-wavelength thermochromic shift takes place. This behavior is found for arylalkyl-polysilanes, diarylpolysilanes, and (cyclo-HexSiMe) . [Pg.220]

Typically, polygermane-polysilane copolymers have similar UV properties as compared with polygermane and polysilane homopolymers . The thermochromic behaviour of the copolymers depends on their monomer-to-monomer ratios in the polymer chain and on the identity of the alkyl substituents. In principle, the fine tuning of the absorption maximum can be achieved by a controlled copolymerization. Unfortunately, the copolymers reported so far often have relatively low molecular weights, which in turn results in the kmax values being even lower than those observed for high molecular weight polysilanes (Table 4). [Pg.1555]

The next question is how side-chain substitutions and skeleton conformations affect the band structures of polysilanes. Side chains provide two interesting effects (7) band gap reduction caused by substitution of larger alkyl side chains and skeleton-side chain interaction (i.e., (j-tt mixing) in aryl poly silanes. This interaction was confirmed by UV photo spectroscopy (UPS) (8-9) and photoabsorption and luminescence measurements (iO, 11). Skeleton conformations are related to thermochromism (12-17). The ab initio... [Pg.516]
