Alkyl sulphosuccinamates

The sulphosuccinamate surfactants were first synthesized by American Cyanamid Company (currently Cytec, USA) in the late 1940s. Later in 1968, the alkyl sulphosuccinamate [10] was patented as a flotation collector. 

The general structure formula for alkyl sulphosuccinamate is shown in Figure 21.6. 

Acid. Taurates, methyltaurates and alkyl sulphosuccinamates are hydrolysed by boiling for 6h under pressure at 150-160°C with 6M hydrocholoric acid. 

Alkyl sulphosuccinamates yield a salt of a fatty amine and sulphosuccinic acid. 

Alkyl sulphosuccinamates are slightly more complicated. The titration in acid solution measures the sulphonate group minus the free fatty amine. The titration in alkaline solution measures the sulphonate group plus the carboxylate group, which is equal to twice the sulphonate group. Half of this titration minus the first titration gives the amine.
