Alcohols and phenols eonsist of two parts, an alkyl/aiyl group and a hydrojQTl group. The properties of alcohols and phenols are ehiefly due to the hydrojQTl group. The nature of alkyl and aiyl groups simply modify these properties. 

Alkyl aiyl ethers are cleaved at the alkyl-oxygen bond due to the more stable aryl-ojqrgen bond. The reaction yields phenol and alkyl halide. 

R = allylic, benzylic, cyclopropylcaibinyl R = 1° alkyl, aiyl, alkynyl... 

After that, the organomagnesium compound reacts with silicon tetrachloride, forming corresponding alkyl(aiyl)chlorosilanes ... 

It is necessary to prevent chemical reactions from becoming too active e.g. the hydrolysis or ammonolysis of organochlorosilanes or the Grignard reaction for the synthesis of alkyl(aiyl)alkoxysilanes.

This chapter concentrates on those processes in which oxidative cleavage of a carbon-silicon bond results in pr uction of the alkyl/aiyl fragment as an alcdiol henol. Other cleavage processes are dealt with, but more briefly.
