Alkenes environmentally friendly methods

Alkene epoxidation is a very useful reaction in industry and organic s)mthesis. The resultant epoxides are essential precursors in the s)mthesis of various important substances like plasticizers, perfumes, and epoxy resins [1]. For example, over 5,000,000 and 70,000 metric tonnes of propylene and butene oxides, respectively, are produced per year [2]. Current commercial production of propylene oxide (PO) usually employs the chlorohydrin process or the Halcon process, which gives rise to disposal problem for the resultant salts or large amounts of coproducts. As a result of increasing stringent enviromnent legislation, there is currently much interest in the research and development of environmentally friendly methods for preparation of PO without any coproduct. [Pg.430]

P -Bromoacetals and f -bromoacetates readily undergo nickel (II) catalyzed cyclization onto alkenes [6, 7]. The process, illustrated in Scheme 12, has its nonelectrochemi-cal counterpart in free radical chemistry as well as in the vitamin Bi2-mediated chemistry discussed previously. It provides an exceptionally powerful method for the construction of six-membered rings under environmentally friendly conditions. [Pg.322]

Since the introduction of the first peptide organocatalyst in the 1980s, a considerable number of new peptide frameworks have been developed that are able to effectively catalyse several important transformations including alcohol esterifications, 1,4-conjugate additions, aldol reactions, Strecker synthesis, asymmetric cyanohydrin synthesis and alkene epoxidation are discussed. A few successful examples of solid-supported peptides and reactions in ball milling under solvent-free conditions have been demonstrated.
