Alkene and Alkyne Addition Reactions

Alkenes and alkynes xmdergo addition reactions in which atoms add across the multiple bond. For example, ethene reacts with chlorine gas to form dichloroethane. [Pg.661]

A Many foods contain partially hydrogenated vegetable oil. The name means that some of the double bonds in the carbon chains of these molecules have been converted to single bonds by the addition of hydrogen. [Pg.661]

Notice that the addition of chlorine converts the carbon-carbon double bond into a single bond because each carbon atom now has formed a new bond with a chlorine atom. Alkenes and alkynes can also add hydrogen in hydrogenation reactions. For example, in the presence of an appropriate catalyst, propene reacts with hydrogen gas to form propane. [Pg.661]

More information about fats and oiis can be found in Chapter 19. [Pg.662]

Addition reactions are common for alkenes and alkynes. Addition reactions can also occur at a C = 0 bond. Some examples of addition reactions are shown on the next page. [Pg.57]
