The present review summarizes current knowledge of the properties, occurrence, synthesis and biological activity of the dendrobatid alkaloids. 

The early stmctural evideace, physical properties, and aromaticity of isoquiaoline have been discussed at the beginning of this article. Two additional trivial names are encountered occasionally 2-benzaziae and leucoline. The widespread occurrence of this stmcture ia such important alkaloids as those found ia cactus, opium, and curare has created a long-standing iaterest ia its syathesis and properties (4).

The occurrence of new furoquinoline alkaloids and their physical properties are indicated in Table VII. N-Methyl-4-quinolones, the so-called isoalkaloids are well known one example is isodictamnine (164), obtained by heating dictamnine with methyl iodide. Isodictamnine, iso-pteleine, isomaculosidine, and isoflindersiamine have now been recognized as constituents of rutaceous species the N-isopentyl alkaloids of Acronychia are also in this category. The alkaloids discussed in this section are grouped in accord with the pattern of oxygenation in the aromatic ring. 

The seasonal variations of the alkaloids and the areas of occurrence of F. officinalis and M. microcarpa have been studied (217, 839). A similar paper was devoted to P. somniferum (513, 840) an analysis revealed that a general accumulation of alkaloids, especially the hydrophenanthrene group, occurred one day after the flower had opened. This coincides with the peak of the pollination period. At that period, besides the principal opium poppy latex alkaloids (morphine, codeine, thebaine, papaverine, and narcotine), several other Dragendorff positive compounds were detected. The lysosomal property and accumulation of the alkaloids in vacuoles of Chelidonium majus have been described (841).
