Aliphatic hydroxyl groups, determination

The lignin model compounds selected for this study possess two functional groups, a phenolic hydroxyl group, and an aliphatic hydroxyl group located on the side chain para to the phenolic hydroxyl group. Experiments were performed to determine the effect of blocking each of these two sites relative to the formation of chromophoric structures. 

The reaction of EDTN [1-ethoxy-A dichloro-sym.-triazinyl) naphthalene] with the primary hydroxyl group of corticosteroids has been utilized for the sensitive determination of small amounts of these compounds [108]. The reagent reacts with phenolic hydroxyl groups but not with secondary aliphatic hydroxyl groups for example, testosterone does not react.

The pH dependence of the reaction of m-tolyl acetate with cyclohexa-amylose implies a pAa of 12.1 for the catalytically active secondary hydroxyl group (Van Etten et al., 1967b). Although this pK at first appears low for the ionization of an aliphatic alcohol, it is consistent with the value of 12.35 determined thermodynamically for the ionization of the secondary hydroxyl groups of the ribose moiety of adenosine (Izatt et al., 1966 Christensen et al., 1966), and with the value of 12.2 reported by Lach for the...
