Alcohols Relatives Structure and Nomenclature

The basic nomenclature for aldehydes and ketones follows that of other organic compounds. The following steps are the keys  

Find the longest chain containing the carbonyl group to determine the parent name. 

Replace the final -e of the hydrocarbon with an -al for aldehydes or an -one for ketones. 

Number the longest chain so the carbonyl has the lowest number. 

Identify and name all substituents attached to the longest chain.
