All of the preparations described above proceed with retention of the amino alcohol configurations, thus ( + )-(lS,27 )-2-amino-l-phenylpropanol (norephedrine) is transformed to the cis-configurated (4/ ,5S)-dihydrooxazole2. 

Hydrolysis of PhCOOR occurs by attack at the carbonyl group, with retention of alcohol configuration.
