Alcohols bilayer solubilization

Electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole on an SWNT electrode using an aqueous HCl 0.5 M solution as electrolyte, resulted in deposition of a PPy film onto the SWNT layer leading to a composite with a bilayer structure, as demonstrated by Raman spectroscopy [112]. Anew method was developed by S.Cosner eta/, in 2008 [111] SWNTs were functionalized by electropolymerizable pyrrole groups following covalent and noncova-lent strategies. The covalent pyrrole grafting was carried out by ester formation between pyrrole alcohol and chemically oxidized SWNTs. The strong Ti-interactions between pyrene and SWNTs were exploited for the noncovalent adsorption of a new pyrene-pyrrole derivative on the pristine CNT surface. The pyrrole-ester-SWNTs were solubilized in THE and electropolymerized by controlled potential electrolysis at 0.95 V. The PPy/SWNT... [Pg.228]

In the case of water-insoluble solutes which do not modify bilayers, such as single-chain alcohol molecules, the solubilization process can be treated within the frame work of a solvent exchange model (40). A liposome molecule (L) has A ax potential sites for alcohol binding. These sites are occupied by water in a buffer solution, and therefore this model is based on the one-to-one exchange of water and solute in the membrane, as follows ... [Pg.172]

Analysis of titration calorimetric data shows the typical values of the equilibrium constant K to be equal to 5 for ethanol and equal to 0.8 for butanol. The affinity of the bilayer for the alcohol decreases as the chain length of the alcohol increases. By using solution theory, it has been proved (41) that the effects are opposite between the solubilization of short-chain and long-chain alcohols in bilayers. Higher alcohols (known as cosurfactants) cannot be treated by considering only simple adsorption of exchange sites at the interface. [Pg.172]
