AlBr3, EtSH, 25°, <1 h, 94% yield. Both methyl aryl and methyl alkyl ethers are cleaved under these conditions. A methylenedioxy group, used to protect a catechol, is cleaved under similar conditions in satisfactory yields methyl and ethyl esters are stable (0-20°, 2 h). ... 

AlBr3, EtSH, 0°, 0.5-1 h, 73-78% yield. Aluminum bromide cleaves aryl and alkyl methyl ethers in high yield methyl esters are stable.
