The air bag unit with deployment module will now be free of the vehicle. This module is made bo be replaced, so removal should not be a problem.

The cover ( deployment door ) of the driver module was an S-RIM PUR moulding, incorporating a reinforcing nylon mesh and supported by an aramid fabric belt. The passenger module was similar but with a metal frame foamed into the cover. It was compatibilized into the dashboard with an aluminium sheet covered with PUR foam and ABS foil, which hinged open as the air bag inflated. 

The sensing devices that trigger the air bags must react very rapidly. For example, consider a car hitting a concrete bridge abutment. When this happens, an internal accelerometer sends a message to the control module that a collision possibly is occurring. The microprocessor then analyzes the measured deceleration from several accelerometers and door pressure sensors and decides whether air bag deployment is appropriate. All this happens within 8 to 40 ms of the initial impact.

Experiments were performed in a Teflon-film bag of about 300 litres placed in a dark box equipped with an irradiation system and a temperature regulation device. The latter consist of 2 fans fixed at the top of the box flushing laboratory air around the bag. The irradiation system consists of 6 Philips TMX 204 LS fluorescent tubes (30 W, max = 254 nm) and 6 Philips TMX 200 LS tubes (18 W, Xmax = 365 nm), distributed on both chamber sides.
