It is very important to understand that an insurance policy is a legal document, and insurance negotiations should be approached on this basis. Insurance contracts have a detailed legal background of both case law and common law in the interpretation of their provisions. Professional insurance advice from a reputable source, whether an insurance company or an insurance broker, is essential if problems are to be avoided. 

The first three sections of an HSG highlight the relevant technical information in the corresponding EHC. Section 4 includes advice on preventive and protective measures and emergency action. Within the Guide is a Summary of Chemical Safety Information, which should be readily available, and should be clearly explained, to all who could come into contact with the chemical. The section on regulatory information has been extracted from the legal file of the International Register of Potentially Toxic Chemicals (IRPTC) and from other UN sources. 

It should be noted that the information given in this publication is based on a review of literature and guidance. This review does not purport to be exhaustive. It is essential that all those involved with construction works do not rely solely on information given in this publication but instead familiarise themselves with relevant source legislation and seek professional advice to ensure they execute their legal duties. 

The Memorandum of Guidance referred to above gives technical and legal guidance on the Regulations and provides a source of practical help. Similarly, the two Codes of Practice provide essential advice for mines and quarries. 

Individual institutions represent the interests of engineers practising in their field and are frequently consulted by Government as a source of expert and impartial advice. The BCS, for example, is consulted on such issues as safety critical systems, the legal protection of software, data protection, and the law relating to misuse of computers.
