Consolidants adhesive qualities

The conclusion of excellence, however, is reserved for consolidants dissolved in polar solvents. When toluene was used as the solvent, very little adhesive quality remained for AYAT and Acryloid B72. The use of toluene-ethanol as solvent reduced the shear strength for Butvar B98 by a relatively small amount, compared to ethanol alone as the solvent. These results agree with previous consolidation tests, in which the improvement factor tended to be larger for polar solvents than for nonpolar solvents (12), The poor adhesion of systems with nonpolar solvents may in part result from the superior penetration of nonpolar solvents, leaving little or no adhesive on the surfaces to be bonded. 

Highly diffusive penetration of SPC can be drastically lowered by active additives that are capable of raising SPC density, and, therefore, its corrosion resistance. As indicated previously, the most effective results were obtained by introduction of FA or TFS additives. Addition of monomeric additives to silicate composition improves the physical-mechanical characteristics and chemical resistance of silicate compositions due to improvement in the quality of silicate bonds and better adhesion between the binder and coarse filler [1], In other words, the influence of the monomeric additives is conditioned by consolidation of liquid glass gel during hardening and modifications of alkaline components due to inoculation of furan radicals. 

Appropriate adhesive and cohesive qualities are needed to effectively reattach degraded sections within the degraded structure. The consolidant must be dimensionally stable as it sets. Expansion and shrinkage of the consolidant can induce considerable deformation of the shape of a degraded object. Anti-shrink-effect (ASE) properties are highly useful in determining the effect the primary consolidant will have on the dissociated tissue.
