Additivity of sigma values

If the aromatic species has more than one substituent the Hammett relationship will hold if the a value employed is the sum of all the sigma values for the substituents we can write the general Hammett equation. 

Provided the substituents are not ortho to the reactive site this relationship holds quite well.
