Nomenclature acyl compounds

Ketenes. Derivatives of the compound ketene, CH2=C=0, are named by substitutive nomenclature. For example, C4Hc,CH=C=0 is butyl ketene. An acyl derivative, such as CH3CH2—CO—CH2CH=C=0, may be named as a polyketone, l-hexene-l,4-dione. Bisketene is used for two to avoid ambiguity with diketene (dimeric ketene). 

Section 20.1 This chapter concerns the preparation and reactions of acyl chlorides, acid anhydrides, thioesters, esters, amides, and nitriles. These compounds are generally classified as carboxylic acid derivatives, and then-nomenclature is based on that of carboxylic acids. 

In Chapter 9 you see the basic structure of each of the carboxylic acids and Ccirboxylic acid derivatives. In this chapter we focus on the carboxylic acids and related compounds, such as esters, acyl chlorides, and acid anhydrides, and we also include some information on amides (see Chapter 13 for an additional examination of cimides). Before you can get into synthesis and reactions, though, you need to understand the structure and nomenclature of these compounds. 

Ketones. Acyclic ketones are named (1) by adding the suffix -one to the name of the hydrocarbon forming the principal chain or (2) by citing the names of the radicals R1 and R2 followed by the word ketone. In addition to the preceding nomenclature, acyclic monoacyl derivatives of cyclic compounds may be named (3) by prefixing the name of the acyl group to the name of the cyclic compound.
