Actinomyces israelii

Actinomycetes Thin filaments that stain positively by Gram s method Actinomyces israelii Nocardia... [Pg.501]

Actinomycosis. The anaerobe Actinomyces israelii is sensitive to several drugs, but not metronidazole, and access is poor because of granulomatous fibrosis. High doses of benzylpenicillin or amoxicillin are given for several weeks the infections are often mixed with other anaerobic bacteria so metronidazole is often given in addition to ensure activity against all components of the mixture. Co-amoxiclav may be a convenient alternative. Surgery is likely to be needed. [Pg.254]

The abdominal form of the so-called ray-fungus disease (actinomycosis) is a non-contagious, mostly chronic infectious disease induced through the gram-positive, anaerobic rod-shaped bacterium Actinomyces israelii. It is a pseudomycosis. Under favourable conditions, this human saprophyte can cause enterocolitis. [Pg.482]

The properties of a dextranase synthesized by an oral strain of Actinomyces israelii have been reported. Chemical analysis of the exo-dextranase ( go.w 4.35, p/4.17, mol. wt. 5.5 x 10 ) from Brevibacterium fuscum showed that it is a glycoprotein containing 429 amino-acid residues, neutral sugars (11 residues), and 2-amino-2-deoxyhexoses (3 residues), whereas the e/iamino-acid residues (including cystine), neutral sugars (10 residues), and 2-amino-2-deoxyhexose (1 residue). ... [Pg.377]
