Acropolis

Acid rain erodes buildings, particularly those constructed from limestone. It has been reported that the Acropolis in Athens has suffered more deterioration in the last 20 years than in the previous 2000. Acidic gases are produced directly by the combination of oxides of sulfur and oxides of nitrogen with water and also by more complex processes involving unburned hydrocarbons and ozone in the atmosphere. [Pg.754]

The relatively soluble calcium compounds formed this way [CaS04. Ca(N03)2] are gradually washed away (Figure B). This process is responsible for the deterioration of the Greek ruins on the Acropolis in Athens. These structures suffered more damage in the twentieth century than in the preceding 2000 years. [Pg.400]

The individual in tlie central tomb was an older male, between 50 and 60 years of age, and his skeleton showed a number of old breaks and lesions that were probably the result of conflict and warfare. Certainly, the age of the individual, the wounds he had suffered, and the probable place of birth correspond with what we know of Yax Kuk Mo . This is likely his tomb and his skeleton at the base of the Copan acropolis. [Pg.241]

The myth we have chosen to adapt is the Fall of Icarus. Briefly, the story material we are working from is this Daedalus (which means "cunning artificer") was both a renowned artist and a brilliant architect and inventor. Jealous because his nephew and favorite pupil Perdix seemed likely to surpass him in every way, he took the boy to the top of the Acropolis and hurled him off. For this he was condemned by the authorities, but he managed to flee to the island of Crete with his young son Icarus. [Pg.50]

Byzantine sources place the Orphanotropheion on the eastern-most hiU of Constantinople, where as Anna Komnena says the access to the sea opens up. The tenth-century historian Joseph Genesios stated that the orphanage stood on the city s acropolis, and, as we have seen, Theodore Prodromos referred to its location as Sion. Although the ridge that Constantine selected for his Church of the Holy Apostles was higher, the Orphanotropheion occupied the citadel of ancient Byzantium, the hill that travelers by sea would first see as they approached Constantinople. ... [Pg.51]
