The oral glucose tolerance test (see p.. 58) is commonly used in the diagnosis of diabetes mcliitus but is also u.sed to investigate growth honnone response in acromegaly. 

Elevated concentrations of IGF 1 in scrum confirm the diagnosis of acromegaly. Single IGF I measurements may in future replace the need for multiple GH determinations during suppre.ssion tests. 

Serum IGF 1 concentrations are of value in the diagnosis of acromegaly and the monitoring of treatment.
