Achilles Tendinopathy

Four cases of tendinopathy have been reported in three men and one woman taking statins (60). The diagnoses were extensor tenosynovitis in the hands, tenosynovitis of the tibialis anterior tendon, and Achilles tendinopathy. Two patients were taking simvastatin and two atorvastatin. The tendinopathy developed 1-2 months after the start of treatment. The outcome was consistently favorable within 1-2 months after drug withdrawal. [Pg.548]

Based on histopathologic examination findings, Achilles tendinopathy may be further subdivided into tendinosis and paratendinitis (Maffulli et al. 1998). These conditions should be considered separate entities although they often coexist and present with similar findings. In the acute phases of Achilles tendinopathy the tendon is diffusely swollen and edematous and symptoms include pain and stiffness with limitation in daily activities, whereas in... [Pg.817]

Achilles tendon rupture without any sudden pain occurred in a 45-year-old female runner who developed bilateral tendinopathy of the Achilles tendon after repeated treatment with ciprofloxacin histological analysis showed cystic changes with focal necrosis (50). [Pg.784]

Tendinopathy has been reported with levofloxacin. Four cases of Achilles tendinitis have been reported in patients taking levofloxacin (29). Two were on chronic dialysis, one was a kidney transplant recipient, and one had chronic vasculitis. In all four cases, tendinitis had an acute onset with bilateral involvement and was incapacitating. In three cases the onset was early during levofloxacin treatment and in one case it began 10 days after the end of treatment. AH the patients recovered completely after 3-8 weeks. [Pg.2049]
