Acetone infrared stretching frequency

Run infrared spectra of pure acetone and of pure propan-2-ol. From them select an absorption band for acetone which does not overlap significantly with any of those for the propan-2-ol. The best band is most probably that at 1718 cm-1, the carbonyl stretching frequency. 

The compound is soluble in H20, slightly soluble in acetone, and insoluble in ethanol or ether. The ultraviolet absorption spectrum shows a band at 38,500 cm.-1 with a molar extinction coefficient of 560. The conductivity in aqueous solution is 217 cm.2 ohm-1 mole-1. The linkage properties are determined from the infrared spectrum5 which shows a C—S stretching frequency at 825 cm.-1 for the JV-bonded isomer.

The structure of the CuNO ionic pair in acetone was investigated by Castro and Jagodzinski [262] using far-infrared and low-frequency Raman spectroscopy and normal coordinate analysis. Three possible structures (C monodentate, C2V monodentate, and C2V bidentate) were studied theoretically. The result obtained for the Civ bidentate structure fits the observed frequencies much better, with an average error of 4 cm , further providing an accurate reproduction of the N isotopic shifts. Two ill-resolved bands observed in the low-frequency Raman spectrum are assigned to the Cu—O2 symmetric (330 cm ) and antisymmetric (347 cm ) stretching.
