For the acetylation of /3-naphthol, the reaction has been shown to be subject to both acidic and basic catalysis (7). The rate of acetylation is slowest between pH 1 and 3 (in glacial acetic acid, acetic anhydride) and increases at both higher and lower acidities. These results may apply to the acetylation of carbohydrates. 

The acetylation reaction has been adapted to the analytical assay of hydroxyl groups (5).
