Acetaminophen is a widely used analgesic and antipyretic drug. The HRP-mediated polymerisation of acetaminophen was carried out in phosphate buffer at 25 °C [200- 201]. Using NMR spectroscopy it was shown that the reaction mixture was composed of two dimers, three trimers and one tetramer. Oligomer formation was due to the formation of covalent bonds between carbons ortho to the hydroxyl group and to a lesser extent, between the carbons ortho to the hydroxyl group and the amido group of another acetaminophen molecule. [Pg.465]

The pyrimido-pteridine N-oxide (168) is well known as an electron acceptor and oxygen atom transfer agent. Its use for the hydroxylation of phenols has now been described.Ultra-violet light irradiation of (168) in acetonitrile solution allows conversion of phenol to a mixture of catecol and hydroquinone, cresol to 4-methylcatecol, tyrosine methyl ester to dopa methyl ester (169), and the pain killer acetaminophen (170) to (171). The reaction is initiated by light induced electron transfer from the phenol to the... [Pg.222]

The decolorized acetaminophen is collected on a Hirsch funnel. It is further purified by crystallization from a methanol/water mixture. There are two procedures given in this experiment. Experiment llA involves crystallization using a Craig tube, whereas Experiment IIB is a larger-scale reaction involving an Erlenmeyer flask and Hirsch funnel for crystallization. [Pg.83]
