Bond angles acetaldehyde

Predict the hybridization, geometry, and bond angles for the carbon and oxygen atoms in acetaldehyde (CH3CHO). [Pg.55]

Structure of acetaldehyde. The CH3 carbon in acetaldehyde is sp3 hybridized, with tetrahedral bond angles of about 109.5°. The carbonyl (C=0) carbon is sp2 hybridized, with bond angles of about 120°. The oxygen atom is probably sp2 hybridized, but we cannot measure any bond angles to verify this prediction. [Pg.56]

Draw a Lewis formula and a three-dimensional structure for each of the following polycentered molecules. Indicate hybridizations and bond angles at each carbon atom, (a) butane, C4H3Q (b) propene, H2C=CHCH3 (c) 1-butyne, HC=CCH2CH3 (d) acetaldehyde, CH3CHO. [Pg.349]

Hint. According to 6-31G calculations, the cisoid and transoid forms of methyl vinyl ketone have practically the same energy and the same bond lengths and angles. Justify this result by comparing the MOs of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde given on p. 249. [Pg.210]
