Academic detailing

One-on-one discussions with practitioners about appropriate therapy choices can be effective but also costly. Such discussions focused on pharmacotherapy have been called academic detailing [32,33]. Academic detailing typically utilizes a practitioner (e.g., physician, pharmacist) to meet with a prescriber to discuss the prescriber s patterns of prescribing. The primary goal often is to offer information to the targeted prescribes to try to improve pharmacotherapy.

One useful approach to tackle this problem of drug-induced illness caused by bad prescribing is known as academic detailing , in which a trained health professional meets with the physician in his or her office and functions as a source of neutral, academically oriented, evidence-based knowledge (see www.RxFacts.org).
