The son of a tailor, Joseph Fourier was a member of a large family. Both of his parents died by the time he was nine. His education began at a local, church-run, military school, where he quickly showed talent in his studies and especially in mathematics. His school persuaded him to tram as a priest. While preparing to take holy orders he taught his fellow novices mathematics. Fourier may well have entered the priesthood, but due to the French Revolution new priests were banned from taking holy orders. Instead he returned to his home town of Auxerre and taught at the militaiy school. His friend and mathematics teacher, Bonard, encouraged him to develop his mathematical research, and at the end of 1789 Fourier travelled to Paris to report on this research to the Academic des Sciences. [Pg.508]

In their 1906 paper to the Academic des Sciences in Paris (almost a century ago), Bordas and d Arsonval [1] demonstrated for the first time that it was possible to dry a delicate product from the frozen state under moderate vacuum. In that state it would be stable at room temperature for a long time and the authors described, in a set of successive notes, that this teehnique could be applied to the preservation of sera and vaednes. Freeze-drying was then officially borne, despite its having been in use eenturies ago by the Incas who dried their frozen meat in the radiant heat of the sun in the rarified atmosphere of the Altiplano. [Pg.23]

Dr. Blatt was bom in Cincinnati, Ohio and received B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University in 1923-1926. He held postdoctoral positions at the College de France in Paris, Harvard University, and the University of Buffalo before he joined the faculty at Howard University as an associate professor in 1932. He became a member of the newly-formed Queens College in 1939, where he was a professor, and stayed for 32 years. His academic pursuits were interrupted during World War II when he was a Science Liaison Officer, the London Mission, in the Office of Scientific Research and Development (1944-1945), and a Technical Aide to Division 8 during the latter year. [Pg.292]
