A Dozen Tips for the Entry-Level Technical Person 

Identify the organization s technologists, technicians, and other team members learn how they are organized. Who are they, where are they, what services do they perform, and to whom do they report Sources of information include administrative charts, the directory, personnel handbooks, maps or drawings of the physieal faeilities, and colleagues. 

Introduee yourself to other team members and the individuals who direct their work. If you are not introduced to these personnel during your initial orientation to the organization, take the initiative to do so on your own. Try to complete this process before you begin to request or offer assistance. 

Unless they volunteer the information, ask people how they want to be addressed or observe how they are addressed by others. This is particularly important when dealing with senior personnel who may be offended by excessive familiarity on your part. 

Always be polite. Words and expressions like please, excuse me, and thank you show respect for individuals and maintain civility in the civilized work place and encourage it in the uncivilized one.
