Valine (a-aminoisovaleric acid), leucine (a-aminoisocaproic acid), and isoleucine (a-amino-/3-methylvaleric acid) each possess a branched carbon chain. Chemically they are quite alike. Leucine and isoleucine, in particular, provide enough difficulty in separation so that they are usually determined together. Most animals cannot synthesize the branched carbon chain. These amino acids, therefore, are indispensable or essential in the diet (cf. list in Chapt. VIIl-6). [Pg.25]
