Zeolites and Their Pore Dimensions

Zeolites are crystalline aluminosilicates containing acid sites of both the Lewis and Brdnsted type. Details of their structure can be found elsewhere. The architecture varies from small, onedimensional pores, such as those found in mordenite, to three-dimensional pores high-silica zeolites formed by such means can be considered to be poisoned, and the effects of such a process are discussed later. More typical deactivation effects are those involving coke deposition, and poisoning by metal oxides and N-containing compounds. As mentioned earlier, if the deposits are preferentially on active sites specific to the formation of particular products, the selectivity of the catalyst to other products will increase.
