The metallic monohaHdes zirconium chloride [14989-34-5] ZrCl, and zirconium bromide [31483-18-8] ZrBr, reversibly absorb hydrogen up to a limiting composition of ZrXH (131). These hydrides are less stable than the binary hydride ZrH2, and begin to disproportionate above 400°C to ZrH2 and ZrX in a hydrogen atmosphere (see also Hydrides). [Pg.433]

There have been no studies of the enthalpies of formation of the lower gaseous zirconium bromides. Values for these parameters have been estimated by [97V1S/COR] from the bond energies of the other zirconium halides. The values estimated by [97V1S/COR] are, Af//° (ZrBr, g, 298.15 K) = (366 25) kJ-mol, Af//° (ZrBrj, g,... [Pg.178]

The values for the lower gaseous zirconium bromides, ZrBr(g) to ZrBr3(g) are noted by this review but not selected due to the laek of experimental data for the enthalpies of formation. The Gibbs energy of formation for ZrBr4(g) is selected by this review. [Pg.179]

Zirconium tetrabromide [13777-25-8] ZrBr, is prepared direcdy from the elements or by the reaction of bromine on a mixture of zirconium oxide and carbon. It may also be made by halogen exchange between the tetrachloride and aluminum bromide. The physical properties are given in Table 7. The chemical behavior is similar to that of the tetrachloride. [Pg.436]

Zirconium chloride and bromide have closely related but dissimilar stmctures. Both contain two metal layers enclosed between two nonmetal layers which both have hexagonal stmcture. In ZrCl, the four-layer sandwich repeats in layers stacked up according to /abca/bcab/cabc/, whereas the ZrBr stacking order is /abca/cabc/bcab/ (188). Both are metallic conductors, but the difference in packing results in different mechanical properties the bromide is much more brittle. [Pg.436]
