Ytterbium hexaboride

The work functions of lanthanum, samarium and ytterbium hexaborides and (La m, JB6 alloys were obtained from secondary ion-ion emission during 8keV argon ion bombardment at 10 A/cm current density (Cherepin et al., 1977). The experimental results were used to estimate qualitatively the energy of the atomic bond on the alloy surface. Replacement of lanthanum atoms by samarium causes an increase in metal-boron and metal-metal bond strength.
