Obtain several new pennies.The cleaner and shinier the penny is, the better the experiment will work. Dirty pennies can be scrubbed with a test tube brush or soaked in 1 M acetic acid to remove surface oxidation. [Pg.183]

A gentle warming of the solution on a hot plate is necessary for the pennies to take on a silver color.The pennies can be turned over and the warming continued until a uniform silver color is achieved.
