The Schizosac-charomyces pombe cells were grown as indicated in Fig. 3 and were broken with glass beads in the Braun homogenizer. The fraction spun down between 1,000g for 5 min and 25,OOOg for 30 min was used as the mitochondrial fraction for spectra B, C, and D. All spectra were measured at 77° K, with a suspension of about 10 mg mitochondrial fraction protein per ml, reduced by a few grains of di-thionite. A sheet of translucid paper was used as reference.
