YbSe compounds

Singh and Srivastava (1977) have observed, as for SmSe, the formation of a curious YbSe compound with a hexagonal cell, with lattice parameters larger than the ones for SmSe. 

Wong and Wood (1971) have shown that YbTe and YbSe single crystal films (0.5 fim) are semiconducting and that the optical absorption is similar to the one in EuS. These compounds are unstable in moist air. 

MSe compounds with trivalent M = Sc, Y, La to Lu except Sm, Eu, and Yb have metallic luster, whereas SmSe, EuSe, and YbSe have a dull appearance. With the metallic phases, the color of inhomogeneous products was more intense than of homogeneous products, landelli [1]. 

Er2Se3 forms solid solutions of the orthorhombic SC2S3 type with Yb2Se3. A compound YbEr2Se4 is formed with YbSe (see p. 411), Guittard et al. [4], Souleau, Guittard [9].

Various sections of the ternary system Yb-As-Se have been studied by Rustamov and Il yasov (1984), Il yasov et al. (1986c). The section As2Se3-YbSe shows formation of the compounds YbAs4Sc2 and Yb3As4Se, melting congruent-ly at 725 and 880°C, respectively, as well as a peritectic reaction at 730°C for the compound YbAs2Se4,...
