During a study dealing with the incorporation of water into scintillation liquids, we observed the presence of carbon-14 in commercially available ethyl alcohol. This is not surprising as ethyl alcohol is produced, at least in part, by the fermentation process of carbohydrates. The development of the high quantum efficiency multiplier phototubes has resulted in the ability to detect small amounts of radioactive materials. Therefore, even less efficient solutions such as xylene-ethanol mixtures can be used for low-level counting. [Pg.469]
