Xenon photoionization cross section

Usually the photoionization cross section of 5s-electrons in xenon serves as an example of the very significant role of cprrela--tions. As is known, 5s-electrons are strongly effected by their neighbours 5p and 4d subshells and are completely collectivised, their photoionization cross section being even qualitatively different from the single-particle picture - Fig. 4. [Pg.292]

Figure 5.22 Reduced matrix elements dy, in atomic units, and relative phases (<5y — <5V), in radians, as functions of photon energy for 5p photoionization in xenon leading to the 5p5 2P3/2 final ionic state. The dashed vertical lines give the 2P3/2 and 2P,/2 ionization thresholds at 12.13 and 13.44 eV, respectively. The data in the continuous range above the 2P1/2 threshold are shown as full circles with error bars. The curves below the 2P3/2 and 2P1/2 ionization thresholds are expected to approach the values in the continuum continuously (for details see the discussion and references in the original publication). From [HSS86] the dt given here are larger by /3 in order to adapt them to the cross section... The experimental data in Fig. 5.21, combined with measured values for the partial cross section angular distribution parameter j8(2P3/2), finally provide the complete information on 5p 1 2 3/2 photoionization in xenon required, and experimental values for the dipole matrix elements Dy can be evaluated [Hei80, HSS86]. The results are shown in Fig. 5.22 using the notation (note the different signs from the factor i (y in equ. (8.35))... [Pg.238]
