Work at RAE, Farnborough

An excellent account of the work of William Watt, the co-inventor of PAN based carbon fiber, is given in a Biographical Memoir [45] and W. Watt, W. Johnson and R. Moreton describe some of the RAE work [46].

summarizing the findings of the 1968 RAE patent, the following important conditions were highlighted [46]  

The oxidation temperature must be controlled below the temperature at which a thermal runaway occurs.
