One of the problems associated with reviewing the impact of ELNs within drug discovery is the issue of dehning exactly what we mean when we talk about such systems. There are many possible dehnition frameworks that allow for conceptual or functional descriptions of typical systems, and we explore some of these in more detail below. 

The stndies of variation patterns in Lasthenia and Brickellia hardly break the snrface of a vast and complex literatnre on chemical variation within Asteraceae. The snbject has been discnssed in detail, with reviews focnsing on polyacetylenes (Bohlmann et al., 1973), sesqniterpene derivatives (Seaman, 1982), and flavonoids (Bohm and Stnessy, 2001). The next examples come from the sesqniterpene lactone literatnre and, again, represent only a sample of the applications that have been made nsing those data. Examples covering the taxonomic hierarchy within Asteraceae np to the early 1980s can be fonnd in the monumental review of the family prepared by Seaman (1982). 

The conduct of clinical trials is regulated in all the countries, except Cypms. In Cypms, the policy of the Ministry of Health is not to permit clinical trials for experimental medical products. Multicountry clinical trials for products licensed in developed countries are undertaken in some institutions and regulated by ethics committees (Table 8.5). In these countries, approval of clinical trials is carried out either by the DRA, as in Estonia, Malaysia, Tunisia, Venezuela and Zimbabwe, or by ethics committees. When the DRA itself is responsible for control, information about the trials is processed centrally. In Tunisia, clinical trials form part of the registration process. Trials are requested, when deemed necessary, by the specialized committee charged with reviewing the new dmg. The Editors have striven, as in previous years, to include in the present volume reviews on greatly diversified subjects, all of timely importance. The article on mellituria in Volume 4 has been supplemented by a survey of galactosemia, and we expect to follow in future volumes with reviews of other inborn errors of metabolism or, in modern parlance, of molecular diseases. Likewise, the article on peptiduria supplements that on aminoaciduria in Volume 2 and that on microbiological assay of vitamins extends previous summaries on the nucleogenic vitamins. The haptoglobins lie on the borderline of hematology.

Method development and optimization are started with review of the currently available methods within the company or in literature.
