Who Should Manage the Medical Provider

Refer to Appendix D for a description of the different ways in which physicians and registered nurses receive specialty training in medicine and the different services that they can provide you [2]. 

No matter what medical surveillance program you decide to use, it is important to use a medical specialist with occupational health/medical training. Not every medical provider is trained to understand the relationships among the workplace, the work performed, and specific medical symptoms. The size and complexity of your medical surveillance program will depend on the size of your workplace, its location in relation to your medical provider, and the nature of the hazards that exist. 

The medical surveillance program works best when managed by a health professional. As we have discussed, this does not mean that you have to hire a health professional as a full-time employee.
