Whitaker, Milton C., 120, 130 Whitmore, Frank, 286 Widener, Peter A. B., 152 Wien, Wilhelm, 117... [Pg.768]

In the same period, Walker and Lewis, along with Columbia University s Milton C. Whitaker, a Coloradan who alternated between industrial and academic careers, were the vanguard of those developing the laboratory course for the emerging discipline. What they wrought came to be known later as the unit operations laboratory [23]. [Pg.15]

Milton C. Whitaker, in The Training of Chemical Engineers, Trans. AlChE 3, 158-168 (1910), advocated a laboratory containing real working models and staffed by technical experts from industries. Almost the whole address was also published in the rival J. Ind. Eng. Chem. 3, 36-39 (1910). What he actually did is reported in The New Chemical Engineering Course and Laboratories at Columbia University, Trans. AlChE 5, 150-169 (1912). For more on Whitaker, see C. F. Chandler s presentation, J. Ind. Eng. Chem. 15,199 (1923). The views of William H. Walker and Warren K. Lewis were recorded in A Laboratory Course for Chemical Engineering, J. Amer. Chem. Soc. 33, 618-624(1911). [Pg.36]

Milton C. Whitaker, On Our Opportunities, JIEC 6 (October 1914) 794. At the turn of the century, Whitaker (1870-1963) received his M.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Colorado and then joined the faculty at Columbia University. When he left the journal, he also left academia, first taking a position at U.S. Industrial Alcohol Company and eventually becoming an executive at American Cyanamid. He won both the Perkin Medal (1923) and Chandler Medal (1950) from the ACS he also worked on the Manhattan Project. M. C. Whitaker, Retired Chemist, [obituary] New York Times, April 4, 1963, p. 47. Until 1919, the industrial division s name was the Division of Industrial Chemists and Chemical Engineers. [Pg.560]
