When specified, proposed connection designs shall be submitted to the pnrchaser for approval before fabrication. The drawing shall show weld designs, size, materials, and preweld and postweld heat treatments.

Do not anchor the saddle plate to the bolster plate or the railway bed. The saddle plate must be free to rotate on the bolster plate. Only the bolster plate is anchored to the railway bed. The most common means of anchoring the bolster plate to the railway bed is welding. Design anchorage for a load of... 

Channel tubes (88 mm o.d. and 4 mm thick) are of welded design and contain fuel assemblies which are cooled by boiling light water. The upper and lower parts of the channel are made of stainless steel and the central part, located in the active zone, is made from a zirconium/2% niobium alloy. The central part is joined to the upper and lower parts by vacuum diffusion-welded stainless steel/zirconium transition joints. The channel tube is attached to the upper duct by a welded joint, and to the lower one by a compensator unit, which is necessary to compensate for the difference in thermal expansion of the channels and ducts without destroying the leak-tightness of the reactor cavity. This type of joint makes it possible to replace a channel during reactor shutdown. 

These are of a fully cast design or a fully fabricated-and-welded design or a combination of both, in which latter case, the drum cheeks are cast and the drum barrels are fabricated from rolled steel plate, often reinforced with compression rings which are welded, bolted or riveted to the inner periphery of the drum barrels to act as stiffeners. The present magnetic force resistance welding process appears to be basically most satisfactory, but it has limits of application to thin cladding. Some developments of the process are in hand at the present time aimed at extending its use and at detailed improvements in weld design. 

The problem of welding INOR-8-stainless steel duplex tubing is being studied. Experiments have indicated that proper selection of alloy ratios and weld design will assure welds that will be satisfactory in liigh-tempera-ture service.
