We recently carried out a systematic invest ation of the influence of chemical bonding on the positions and the profiles of the emission lines of the 3d transition elements. All these elements exhibited a definite dependence of the x-ray wavelength on their valence and on the electronegativity of the neighborii atoms. The width and the asymmetry of the lines depended on the number of unpaired electrons and this was also true of the magnetic moments of simple compoimds.
