Warehouse Safety New Employee Orientation

The proper orientation of new employees is often one of the most neglected elements in a safety and health program. What better time to demonstrate the values and direction of an organization and warehouse than during the first day on the job The turnover of many new en loyees occurs within the first few weeks. Some of this turnover is attributable to a lack of real interest in the new employee by the employer. 

New employee orientation can set the tone for an employee s career with a company. In employee orientation, as in any relationship, first iirpressions count. This is the opportunity for the employer to introduce the organization to the individual in terms of its culture, values, goals, and safety practices. 

The new employee s immediate supervisor should be actively involved in the orientation process that identifies activities in the warehouse. In addition, the personnel or human resources department usually plays a key role in the orientation process. There are obviously many administrative details that are important to the organization, and the new employee must know what they are. 

In those warehouses where there is a sound working relationship between workers and management, new employees are often given orientations by fellow employees. Facility tours are provided by safety team leaders or safety committee members. Any new employee forms opinions about the new employer. Something as basic as observing the condition of the parking lot,
