Walter H. Stockmayer

Walter Stockmayer made beautiful polymermusic for more than 60 years. He was a Renaissance man with degrees from both MIT and Oxford, as a Rhodes Scholar. After his Ph.D. in 1940 he worked on war projects at Columbia before returning to MIT in 1945. In 1952 he was promoted to Full Professor and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1956. He received the National Medal of Science in 1987 (Fig. 5.5). [Pg.65]

He was a master of classical physical chemistry and specialized in the structure and dynamics of polymeric systems. He was both a good theorist and a careful experimentalist. He studied primarily solutions and gels. His comprehensive knowledge of polymer science led to many industrial consultantships, and he was welcomed internationally with both awards and foreign memberships. He was one of the founding editors of the journal Macromolecules. [Pg.66]
