Walk-around rights

If flow occurred in an open channel with no particles or fibers and if there were no other mixing mechanisms, all particles would transit the same distance from beginning to end. In a packed bed, each time a molecule or atom encounters a particle or fiber it must go around it to continue on. It is analogous to encounter a tree in a field—one either walks around it to the right or the left and that is equivalent to flipping a coin. Some molecules will encounter more particles than others as illustrated in the following scheme where each encounter causes a chance in direction and the path of a hypothetical molecule is traced by a line (Scheme 1). 

I have three readily available identity states. State 1 has its roots in my childhood. We can call it the Explorer. The Explorer likes to hike around and discover things. This particular identity incorporated important aspects of my essence, as I was always curious about almost everything. The Explorer also believes he has a right to walk around outside and resents the way people put up fences and other barriers that impede him.

When your subject is a physical object, you should select some orderly means of describing it from left to right, top to bottom, inside to outside, and so forth. For example, you might describe a sculpture as you walk around it from front to back. Below is a paragraph describing a cowboy in which the writer has ordered the details of his description in a head-to-feet pattern. 

We went over to the vacant lot and looked at the ragged hole in the ground. It was a shell crater, all right. Sandy walked around it, sizing it up with a professional eye.

Although this mine will injure anyone who sets it off, and quite possibly anyone else in the vicinity, it is the psychological threat that is most effective. No one in his right mind would willingly walk into a mine field. Just post a few "Danger/Minefield" signs around the area.
