Visualization technique

The explorative analysis of data sets by visual data mining applications takes place in a three-step process During the first step (overview), the user can obtain an overview of the data and maybe can identify some basic relationships between specific data points. In the second step (filtering), dynamic and interactive navigation, selection, and query tools will be used to reorganize and filter the data set. Each interaction by the user will lead to an immediate update of the data scene and will reveal the hidden patterns and relationships. Finally, the patterns or data points can be analyzed in detail with specific detail tools. 

These tools and techniques can be classified by three different criteria [22] the data to be visualized, the technique itself, and the interaction and distortion method. 

Large data sets such as screening data or results obtained by combinatorial experiments are made up of a large number of data records. Hence a data record may represent a chemical reaction or substance, for example its corresponding variables will define the corresponding reaction conditions or biological activities. Depending on the dimensionality or data type of the information, one-, two-, multidimensional, or specific data types can be identified. 

Because of the usually multidimensional character of chemical information, we will only describe information visualization techniques here that have been developed to handle multivariate data. These techniques may be classified into  

Besides these main categories, a large number of hybrid visualization techniques also exist, which arc combinations of the methods described. Well-known hybrid approaches arc the 2D or 3D glyph displays. These techniques combine the multidimensional representation capabilities of icon-based methods with the easy and intuitive representations of scatter-plot displays, Therefore these techniques can also be frequently found within chemical data analysis applications.

Figiu e 9-33 shows the three major visualization techniques geometric display, icon-based display, and hierarchical display, as well as the hybrid technique with 3D glyphs. 

The use of graphic displays as an essential element of computer-based instmctional systems has been exploited in a number of ways. Molecular modeling and visualization techniques have supplemented the traditional set of stick models in courses on organic and inorganic chemistry, and animation of molecular motion and of the progress or mechanism of chemical reactions has been a useful classroom tool. 

Two successful and widespread appHcations of visualization techniques in the field of chemistry are the visualization of molecular orbitals and the visualization of molecules in molecular mechanics studies. 

A review of flow visualization techniques suitable for use in hospital laboratories was carried out several years ago. 

The carrying out of visualization techniques or measurements is one approach to obtain answers to these questions. Computer simulation is another method that is now becoming a more exact science. A third, essential approach is to depend on experience and good engineering judgment. All the above methods may eventually lead to success however, the effort and cost of the work may differ considerably. This chapter describes the measurement and visualization techniques that can be applied in industrial ventilation problems. 

The reasons for using airflow or contaminant dispersion visualization techniques may be divided into purely technical and pedagogical, both with the purpose to give a base for the design and proper use of a contaminant control technology for workplaces with a good air quality. 

Analyses for the Saxitoxins. Early methods for analysis of the saxitoxins evolved from those used for toxin isolation and purification. The principal landmarks in the development of preparative separation techniques for the saxitoxins were 1) the employment of carboxylate cation exchange resins by Schantz et al. (82) 2) the use of the polyacrylamide gel Bio-Gel P2 by Buckley and by Shimizu (5,78) and 3) the development by Buckley of an effective TLC system, including a new solvent mixture and a new visualization technique (83). The solvent mixture, designated by Buckley as "E", remains the best for general resolution of the saxitoxins. The visualization method, oxidation of the saxitoxins on silica gel TLC plates to fluorescent degradation products with hydrogen peroxide and heat, is an adaptation of the Bates and Rapoport fluorescence assay for saxitoxin in solution. Curiously, while peroxide oxidation in solution provides little or no response for the N-l-hydroxy saxitoxins, peroxide spray on TLC plates is a sensitive test for all saxitoxin derivatives with the C-12 gemdiol intact.

In the previous section, five basic mechanisms of photopolymer reactions were identified.
