Reaction 11.3 occurs for both the praseo and violeo complexes. [Pg.206]

There are two simple types of geometric isomerism possible for octahedral complexes. The first exists for complexes of the type MA2B4 in which the A ligands may be either next to each other (Fig. 12.18a) or on opposite apexes of the octahedron (Fig. 12.18b). Complexes of this type were studied by Werner, who showed that the praseo and violeo complexes of tetraamminedichlorocobalt(in) were of this type (see Chapter 11). A very large number of these complexes is known, and classically they provided a fertile area for the study of structural effects. More recently there has been renewed interest in them as indicators of the effects of lowered symmetry on electronic transition spectra. [Pg.778]

The most convincing evidence for Werner s theory came in 1907, when his student, Czech chemist, J. V. Dubsky, successfully synthesized the elusive violeo (cis) isomer of CoCl3 (NH3)4, predicted to exist by coordination theory but not by chain theory. As Werner had predicted, this complex underwent rapid solvolysis in aqueous solution, making isolation difficult. After Dubsky proved the existence of c -CoCl3 (NH3)4, Jprgensen conceded to coordination theory. Jprgensen died in 1908, having never met Werner face to face. [Pg.28]

Dubsky obtained the cw-[CoCl2(NH3)4]X isomer by the hydrolysis of a binuclear complex at low temperature, isolating the violeo salt in the form of the dithionate ... [Pg.62]
