Vinyl protons deshielding effects

Aldehyde Protons Aldehyde protons (—CHO) absorb at even lower fields than vinyl protons and aromatic protons between 59 and 810. Figure 13-14 shows that the aldehyde proton is deshielded both by the circulation of the electrons in the double bond and by the inductive electron-withdrawing effect of the carbonyl oxygen atom. 

Deshielding of the aldehyde proton. Like a vinyl proton, the aldehyde proton is deshielded by the circulation of electrons in the pi bond. It is also deshielded by the electron-withdrawing effect of the carbonyl (C=0) group, giving a resonance between 89 and 510. 

Although the nitrile group deshields all of the vinyl protons, it has an abnormally strong deshielding effect upon the cis olefinic hydrogen. 

He = 7.10 ppm (vinyl proton at C-3). It appears as a doublet of quartets (dq), with some partial overlap of the quartets Jbe trans = 15.6 Hz and Jac = 6.9 Hz. Notice that He is shifted further downfield than Hb because of the resonance effect of the carboxyl group and also a through-space deshielding by the oxygen atom in the carbonyl group.
