Vetiver oil is produced by steam distillation of the roots of the grass Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash (Poaceae), which grows wild or is cultivated in many tropical and subtropical countries. The oil is a brown to reddish-brown, viscous liquid with a characteristic precious-wood and rootlike, long-lasting odor. The specifications given in Table 8 refer to oil qualities produced in Reunion,Haiti, Indonesia (Java), and China. [Pg.224]

Terpineol has been found in enantiomerically pure form as (-)-enantiomer in Vetiveria zizanioides and as (-i-)-enantiomer in Micromeria fruticosa. [Pg.377]

Vetiver olli Viscous, brown to reddish brown oil with a heavy, very adherent, earthy, slightly acidic, woody, balsamy odor, often with a fatty-moldy head note. Production By steam distillation from the roots of the tropical grass species Vetiveria zizanioides (Poaceae). Origins Reunion ( Bourbon ), Haiti, Indonesia, Brazil, China, India. The yearly world-wide production is probably about 2001. [Pg.690]

Secretory idioblasts are individual cells producing an essential oil in large quantities and retaining the oil within the cell like the essential oil idioblasts in the roots of Vetiveria zizanioides that occurs within the cortical layer and close to the endodermis (Bertea and Camusso, 2002). Similar structures containing essential oils are also formed in many owers, for example, Rosa sp., Viola sp., or Jasminum sp. [Pg.44]
